Insurance Insider US is looking for a Senior Section Editor to join its rapidly growing team in New York.  We provide unrivalled intelligence and real-time insight to senior professionals in specialty insurance, covering the big-ticket insurance implications of everything from cyber attacks, political violence and high-seas piracy, to wildfires, hurricanes and tornadoes.  

You will come into the newly created role to spearhead the insurance lines of business coverage for the US start-up arm of an established international brand, becoming a part of a team laser-focused on delivering first-class news, commentary and research to its readership.  Under the oversight of the Managing Editor, you will lead a team of journalists focused on uncovering the latest in both established and emerging insurance markets, from commercial property to cyber, from workers’ compensation to cannabis.

This is a hands-on, in-the-trenches role in a fast-paced newsroom, which will require you to lead from the front. You should be a keen editor, with the ability to mentor and guide reporters on their coverage, as well as taking the opportunity to work and report you own beat.  Prioritizing and executing effectively under pressure are key attributes we are looking for in a candidate.

We operate a flexible working policy, but the Insurance Insider US news team come into the New York office a few days a week to collaborate and learn from one another (one day mandatory).  P&C insurance experience is highly preferred, but we will consider candidates with a track record in editing and managing reporters in a fast-paced financial services publication.  The content is delivered to our subscribers digitally through regular ad hoc emails, via daily emails - which represent a cornerstone of our content - and also online.

What will you do?

• Oversee and drive content from the lines of business section, which covers specific parts of the insurance market, including that of your team members. This includes:
  • Monitoring key themes and setting the agenda for content
  • Aligning the content for your section with the company’s commercial plan and other business priorities
  • Editing value-add content (scoops, long form, commentary, interviews etc) from your team and providing feedback where necessary
  • Taking responsibility for quality and quantity of output from your section
• Contribute value-add content, maintaining and building your own network of contacts and leading by example in terms of quantity and quality of value-add content production. 
• Line manage a team of journalists, ensuring they are both contributing to the wider product/team goals and are happy and fulfilled professionally.

• Conduct regular performance reviews around both short term and long-term goals
• Facilitate career development by arranging training/coaching sessions

• Be a senior member in the wider Insurance Insider US editorial team, by:

• Assisting the US managing editor on editing/bandwidth, and deputize in their absence when needed
• Assisting on wire editing and earnings coverage when needed
• Providing advice/coaching to more junior members of the team, including those outside of your section, when needed/appropriate

You will also:

• Help moderate panels/roundtables at Insurance Insider conferences/events, and represent the brand generally 
• Determine events priorities for your team and direct events assignments/coverage/meeting schedules
• Develop content for conferences and sourcing speakers
• Assisting the commercial team in sales discussions, where appropriate 

Experiences and Competencies for Success:

• Knowledge and/or experience of the P&C insurance markets is preferred but not essential

• Experience operating within a fast-paced market intelligence/niche B2B business title focused on delivering proprietary content including exclusive news, analysis and commentary

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build off-the-record sources to break exclusive news

• Cultural values including: A determination to win; a desire to play a role on a cohesive/collaborative team; a craftsman’s approach to their work; and integrity

• Financially and numerically literate, with a track record of covering financial services, and a genuine interest in the insurance market, finance and the economy 

• Strong editing and writing skills, with a well-developed news sense and scrupulous attention to detail

• Experience working in a high-growth business, with an expanding team
