Salary: non-remunerated / voluntary

Hours: circa 4 hours per month

Contract: 3 years

Location: Remote - Predominantly remote working, and regular travel is required to Jisc offices and/or customers. Meeting in person is something we value so you may need to travel on occasion to our hub offices.

Jisc is seeking to appoint a new independent member to our Audit and risk management committee.  The Audit and risk management committee reports into the Jisc board.  In order to support a balance of skills and experience across the committee, Jisc is seeking an individual with experience of cyber security, preferably in the higher or further education sector, to join the committee.  The Audit and Risk Management committee has a key role in ensuring that the Jisc Group and each company within it has adequate and appropriate internal controls and that the integrity of the financial statements of the Group and its subsidiary companies are beyond dispute. The committee also monitors the work and effectiveness of the internal audit function. Reference should be made to the full committee terms of reference to ensure the role of the committee and its responsibilities are understood.

About the role:

Members of the Audit and risk management committee have a key role in ensuring that the Jisc Group has adequate and appropriate internal controls and that the integrity of the financial statements of the Group and its subsidiary companies are beyond dispute. The committee also monitors the work and effectiveness of the external and internal auditors.

The independent committee member would have the cyber expertise to be able to guide the committee providing robust challenge and support in the strategic planning and decision-making processes.  This would, in turn, guide the board on the strategy for being the sector’s trusted cyber security partner and provider of the UK’s national research and education network (NREN).

Collectively with the other members of the Audit and Risk Management Committee, committee members take responsibility for providing support, challenge and strategic direction to the Board and the Executive Leadership Team. 

 

This role responsibilities include: 

  • Acting in furtherance of the terms of reference of the committee; 
  • Acting in furtherance of Jisc’s strategy, vision and mission; 
  • Upholding the Nolan’s seven principles of public life, observing high standards of corporate governance, including respecting and promoting equality and diversity;  
  • Attending scheduled committee meetings and contributing to impartial decision-making; 
  • Undertaking any other such training as may be required from time to time; and participating in committee effectiveness reviews. 

 

Independent members of the Audit and Risk Management committee are appointed by the Nominations and Governance committee. 

 

Experience Skills & personal qualities

  • A strong collaborator who is able to provide effective challenge where necessary   
  • Committed to Jisc and willing to uphold its values  
  • A solid and demonstrable understanding of risk management 
  • A good understanding of the risks facing Jisc 
  • Sound financial knowledge  
  • Cyber experience from HE/FE sector
