Principal OHL Engineer & Design Manager

£70k - £90k Plus (depending on experience) + Car or Car Allowance + Flexible Benefits

 

Summary

Freedom Electrical Design is looking for a professional principal overhead line engineer to join our growing team and work on an array of complex and challenging engineering projects that are helping to deliver the country’s Net Zero targets. Our projects span the complete energy system from generation, transmission, distribution and storage, to load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data and recycling.

 

This role will lead to being the Head of OHL Design within the Freedom Design business within 1-2years, as the company grows. The job title for this role follows our design organisation grading and role naming structure, and starts at Principal OHL Engineer.

 

You will be based from either our Leeds, Stowmarket or London offices, with options to work from Home. You will be required to Travel as and when required for client meetings, internal team meetings or site visits.

 

Some of the key deliverables in this role will include:

  • Build and grow the Freedom OHL design team working with senior Freedom management. This will involve working to attract people, clients and work opportunities to Freedom and the OHL team, working closely with the Freedom BD teams.
  • Responsible for all aspects of OHL design, including conductor sizing and modelling, insulation selection, lightning protection, line routing, PLS-CAD modelling, clearance checking and structure and foundation design and analysis using PLS-TOWER or PLS-POLE.
  • Production of technical documents, such as engineering reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Preparation of proposals for OHL design projects including design scope, allocating resource, costing, program and deliverables.
  • Communicate the aspirations and goals of the company to the wider OHL design team.
  • Provide technical leadership in OHL engineering to all internal and external parties
  • Co-ordinate the OHL team across projects working with other internal and external parties.
  • Supervising of design projects through their life cycle (concept, feasibility, and detailed design).
  • Review of final documentation for submission ensuring compliance with technical standards, CDM, health and safety, and client requirements.
  • Lead and motivate the design team in the development of processes and procedures to deliver technical services more effectively.
  • Performing quality checks to ensure designs are undertaken in compliance with company processes and procedures.
  • Supervising training and mentoring of the OHL design team members.

 

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for highly motivated self-starters who are driven by a challenge and have a hunger to grow and build the technical capability of the organization through their leadership and guidance.

Strong budgetary and project management skills are required at this level, accompanied by good commercial knowledge of design and construction contract forms such as NEC, and experience of working within the contract conditions.

 

You must have Qualifications and experience in:

  • Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • Hold NGED TP141 accreditation.
  • Experience in leading OHL design projects at transmission and distribution voltages including wood pole and lattice steel tower OHL design.
  • Experience in the design of folded steel pole OHL structures desirable.
  • Technical experience in the production of designs, calculations, reports & drawings associated with new build and refurbishment OHL projects from 11kV – 400kV.
  • Experience in OHL design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER.
  • Have a full understanding of CDM 2015 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations
  • Full UK driving license.
